1968-1974 Nova Subframe Bushing Replacement
Intro Section
Worn subframe bushings are one of the biggest causes of poor handling, vibrations, and panel alignment issues on 1968-1972 Chevy Nova's. Replacing them tightens up the chassis, improves ride quality, and restores proper body alignment. Also interchanged with 1967-1969 Camaro and Firebird subframes. Minor differences may exist in transmission crossmember mounting holes. 1971-1974 Buick Apollo, Oldsmobile Omega and Pontiac Ventura too.
This guide covers what to expect, tools needed, and parts we recommend when replacing Nova subframe bushings.
Symptoms of Bad Subframe Bushings
• Clunking or popping noises
• Uneven door gaps
• Poor steering feel
• Vibration through the body
• Visible cracked or collapsed rubber
Tools Needed
• Floor jack and jack stands
• Socket set and breaker bar
• Penetrating oil
• Torque wrench
• Pry bar
• Block of wood
Subframe Bushing Options
I found a set from Amazon, "Energy Suspenstion" that are polyurethane.
Or you can use
Rubber Bushings, your choice.
• Best for factory ride
• Quieter and more forgiving
Polyurethane Bushings
• Tighter handling
• More road feel
• Slight increase in vibration
Recommended Parts

Basic Replacement Overview
1. Support the car safely on jack stands
2. Loosen (do not remove) all subframe bolts
3. Lift one side of the body slightly
4. Remove old bushing and install new one
5. Repeat on the opposite side
6. Torque bolts to factory specifications
Replace bushings one side at a time to maintain alignment.
Builder Notes
Replacing subframe bushings makes a noticeable difference in ride quality and steering response. On a high-mileage Nova, expect old bushings to be brittle or collapsed. Taking your time and measuring body gaps before and after is strongly recommended.
